Im currently a level 6 aran warrior. I have an iron pot helmet silver longsword and woodsmans armour in combat and have level 5 lumberjack and fishing. What should i be doing to get better at this stage. I know i need to level but is there anything else? Thx

do you have all the best equipment that is available to you? Do you need some gold if there is better equipment available?

I agree with Sants. At this point I would also try to increase your alchemy level as well. Once you hit level 20 you will be able to go on a quest that will give you items to make a better healing potion (if I have my facts correct - I just hit lvl 20 today)
Do the quests (if they are available) at Ogar's Blacksmith and Grizzle's Junkheap to see if you can get a Warscythe drop. This weapon in my opinion is better than the longsword.

I just looked Warscythe at lvl 7 and TwilightSlasher at lvl 10, chainmail at lvl 8 so he should lvl up a couple as fast as he can and it should get much easier from that point on.

as far as Alchemy skill is concerned you can buy Moontear Gems to make Shadow Draught, I think it's one Moontear and one empty flask. Moontears go for as little as $1,000 to $2B in the AH but it's a fast way to lvl up Alchemy

qworc, nice on the Warscythe...it's a good weapon that should last you for awhile until you get the level/cash for the Twilight Slasher.
I would also recommend searching in the Auction House for some Golden Knitted Chainmail. They used to sell for a lot, but their rarity went down, so you could probably grab one on the cheap. Let me know if you need some extra cash for this and I'll be happy to help.
The way I leveled up my alchemy skill was to really hammer the quest 'A Special Ingredient' for an absolute crap ton of pixie wings. This is a much cheaper way of getting components for the skill. Plus, at least for me, by fighting easy enemies a lot got my kill count up which helped my critical strike attribute.
