Hey, i'm now lvl16 and i was wondering what the best setup (equip/stats) for a mage would be.
Currently i'm using: Hat Of The Apprentice Flamewood Staff Golden Knitted Chainmail Steel Gauntlets
with: Coord 4 End 7 Flex 8 Int 3 Know 3 rad 3 (+10) Str 4 Vig 1 Will 17

Wish I could help ya, only played a Thull Warrior so far myself. Almost lvl 20 on him but up until now I used the vapormind potions to test different stat builds, put stats in, go do some fights, then test something else until I found something I liked.

I'm lvl 19 Thull Mage here is my build so far. Glorious Helmet Twilight Slasher Hardened Leather Armor Necklace of Valor Steel Gauntlets Cord - 2 End - 2 Flex - 6 Int - 18 Knw - 3 Rad - 8 Str - 13+2 racial bonus Vig - 1 Wil - 3 This allows me to cast blowback twice and drown once plus with the Twilight Slasher I get the lifeleech effect. I use the Rising Dead quest in Alvins Cove as a test which I am able to kill 20+ Undead Militia Guards without going back to town or taking healing potions. I usually go Drown - Blowback - Attack - Blowback - Attack - Attack - Attack(if needed) and take roughly 10 damage while dealing 500+ Let me add by saying that this build works great for low damage dealing monsters but I recently went back and played the very first quest trying to get pixie wings the Shadow Sprites are kicking my ass.... I can kill a couple before I have to heal, they deal so much damage

My gear is:
Hat of the apprentice 1 armor, 8 fire damage
Firewood staff 2 armor, 4 fire damage
Archer's Vestings 11 armor, 8 ranged damage (i don't think it does anything for my spells)
Necklace of Valor 4 armor
Steel Gaunlets 4 armor
Apparently you can wear anything with any stats if you respec to the requirements, wear them, then respec again. I doubt this will work forever, but it might be useful for now.
As for my strategy, with the stats i have, i do like 275-295 damage per flare, i have enough energy to do a blowback and 4 flares.. there isn't a monster in the game i can't kill with four flares. Usually it takes three so basically I'll take like 12 damage for almost 900 damage.

taking hellfires suggestion in the armour i have specked with max will power and little int Co-ord 2 End 1 Flex 1 Int 7 Know 3 Rad 11 Stre 1 Vig 1 Will 45
Using
Hat of the Waterwitch for the + 10 water dmg Flamewood war staff for the +4 fire dmg Archer Vestments Harvest necklace Harvest gloves
On initial drown can hit a Razorshank Coar for 295 combined dmg
